E-birth registration: NPC urges parents to beware of touts issuing fake certificates

The National Population Commission (NPC) on Tuesday cautioned parents against falling victims of touts masquerading as officials of the commission to conduct fake e-registration and issue fake certificates.

The commission which identified the activity of unscrupulous persons issuing fake certificates as a major challenge, added that e-registration has made it possible to expose their activities.

The NPC comptroller Eti Osa local government, Mr Okesanjo Isiaka stated this while fielding questions from journalists who are on field trip to one of the e-registration centers, being parts of a two -day media dialogue organized by the UNICEF in collaboration with the Lagos state government and NPC.

According to him, the mode of their operations is to impersonate the commission and issue fake certificates to unsuspecting parents and extorting money from them.

He however urged parents or informants to visit the five centers designated for the e-registration and make sure that they relate with the NPC officers.

Isiaka who disclosed that no fewer than 1,363 registration done so far this year, added that unlike the manual registration, the e-registration is less cumbersome.

He said that in case fire outbreak and flooding destroyed the registration files, the data could be retrieved.

The NPC boss said that every child born in the country is is entitled to a birth certificate, noting that a child is entitled to one certificate once in a lifetime.
