Tragedy struck in Oke Ila area of Ado Ekiti this afternoon as the lifeless body of a middle-aged woman was retrieved from a canal by operatives of the Ekiti State Fire Service.
Eyewitnesses at the scene said that the woman whose identity is yet to be ascertained, had earlier jumped into the canal and was initially rescued by passersby but later jumped into the same canal.
However, by the time the fire brigade operatives who were alerted came to the scene, they were only able to retrieve her lifeless body from the water, because she was already dead at the time.
Another source at the scene of the incident said the woman was allegedly one of the mentally unstable patients that are been treated at a trado medical home close to the canal.
The incident created a tense atmosphere in the area as people were seen discussing and wondering what could have driven the woman to take such drastic action such as taken her own life.
