INEC to punish staff, blacklist erring transporters over FCT election operational failures

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, has launched an internal investigation into operational failures during the recent Federal Capital Territory (FCT) council elections, vowing that negligent staff will face strict disciplinary action.

Presiding over a post-election review meeting in Abuja on Wednesday, Prof. Amupitan specifically highlighted logistical lapses in the Kuje and Kabusa areas.

He warned that the commission would no longer tolerate administrative shortcomings that threaten the credibility of the electoral process.

In a move to enforce accountability among external partners, the Chairman also announced that transporters responsible for delaying materials to the Kwali Area Council would be permanently blacklisted.

The meeting, attended by Resident Electoral Commissioners from across the federation, served as a post-mortem for last Saturday’s polls in the FCT, as well as by-elections held in Rivers and Kano states.

Beyond addressing immediate failures, Amupitan framed the review as a critical step in the “continuous improvement” strategy leading up to the 2027 general elections.

“We must draw lessons from every election to correct deficiencies before larger national exercises,” he noted.

The election results themselves painted a picture of a highly competitive political landscape in the nation’s capital.
