The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a significant shift in the 2027 general election timetable, bringing the dates forward by more than a month.

In a statement released on Thursday in Abuja, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, revealed that the Presidential and National Assembly elections will now take place on Saturday, January 16, 2027.

Following this, the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections have been rescheduled for Saturday, February 6, 2027.

This update replaces the earlier schedule, which had the national elections set for February 20 and state-level polls for March 6.

The Commission noted that while the previous dates were set in accordance with the Electoral Act 2022, this new adjustment streamlines the electoral calendar as the country prepares for the next transition.
