FG suspends hike in WAEC, NECO fees due to public outcry

From Kayemo News

The Federal Ministry of Education has suspended the planned increase of the WAEC and NECO registration fees to N50,000. Following public outcry and heavy criticism over the economic strain it would place on families, the government withdrew the initial memo to allow for a comprehensive review.

The suspended directive, which was originally issued on June 18, 2026, aimed to introduce a uniform fee structure of N50,000 for both examinations starting in the 2027 academic session.

This represented an 82% hike from the current fees.

Recall that groups, parents, and student bodies like NANS strongly rejected the uniform fee hike. They warned that it would lead to a spike in out-of-school children.

Also , high-profile figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, publicly called for the reversal of the policy, citing widespread economic hardship.

The Ministry however announced that the letter conveying the proposed fee adjustment has been officially withdrawn to address the concerns raised.
