The Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) has given the Telecommunications network providers marching order to commence disconnection of under age 18 subscribers across the country.
According to the NCC, SIM acquisition is a contract between service providers and their subscribers, which requires the subscriber to have proper legal status, to sue and be sued.
It was learnt that the operators, especially MTN had recommended that the age limit for procuring communications services should be scaled down to permit ages 14 years and above to own a line.
The NCC, however said to have insisted on 18 years and above for anyone who wants to own and register a SIM in Nigeria.
Justifying the decision, the NCC said was reported as saying that the regulation is to protect minors, adding that, parents and guardians could acquire SIMs in their names on behalf of their children and wards in which case they assume whatever responsibilities or liabilities arise from the usage of such SIMs.
The commission was also quoted as saying that the measure is expected to also strengthen national security.
“While the Commission is progressively pursuing digital inclusion for all, the draft proposal is intended to guarantee increased monitoring of children and shield the minors from undue liabilities in line with NCC’s Child Online Protection drive.”
