Tax Reform: Ekiti government seeks establishment of revenue Courts to hear Tax default offenses

From Kayemo News
In its effort to nip revenue related crimes in the bud, the Ekiti State Internal Revenue Service, EKIRS, has sought the designation of some courts in Ekiti as revenue courts as well as the establishment of mobile courts to handle revenue matters.
Executive Chairman of EKIRS, Mr. Olaniran Olatona, made the request during a meeting between the Service’s legal team and the Chief Judge of Ekiti State, Hon. Justice Lekan Ogunmoye, at the State High Court in Ado-Ekiti.
He explained that the courts, when established, will hear revenue related matters expeditiously and with the required priority for such cases. Mr. Olatona further emphasized that the revenue and mobile courts had become necessary in order to boost revenue generation in Ekiti State and to aid the Service in delivering on its mandate.
Reacting, the Chief Judge admitted that the move was timely and needed to deter people from committing tax-related offenses and to block loopholes that hamper the ongoing revenue generation drive of State.
Hon. Justice Ogunmoye, who then acceded to the request of EKIRS, assured the Service of the necessary legal framework and institutional support for the project.
Those at the parley include; Hon Justice Adeniyi Familoni, Head, Legal Department of EKIRS, Mr. Augustine Olaifa, Legal Officers of EKIRS; Mrs. Odunayo Adeyanju, Miss Emmanuella Akinyemi, Head, Ministries, Departments and Agencies Department of EKIRS, Mr. Adeyemi Adekoya, among others.
