The Medical Director of the Olive Fertility Center, Ado-Ekiti, Professor Augustine Adeniyi Adebayo has said that no fewer than 123 babies have been born through the In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) in the facility.

The Professor of Gynaecology and Obstetrician, as well as, the Chief Consultant at the Federal Teaching Hospital Ido Ekiti, said that the vision to start the IVF came in 2019, saying that before then those who cant get pregnant we send them to Lagos, Abuja or Ibadan.

Prof Adeniyi who spoke with newsmen in Ado Ekiti on the unprecedented breakthrough in IVF recorded at Olive Fertility Center, Ado-Ekiti, gave a breakdown of the babies born through the method.

According to him, “as at today we have 123 babies born through IVF. This August alone, we had 9 babies. Some of them are not delivered here. I delivered three myself.”

He added that “we have 123 babies, out of them we have 81 single babies. We have 20 twins and we have eight sets of triplets.”

Prof Adeniyi said he vision to help women conceive through IVF came in 2019 and “I asked myself what can we do to correct the export of our patients to other land.

“In 2011, I travel to India to train, I have a training in IVF in India. Again, I also went to Germany to train for IVF after which we started and by the grace of God, our first success came on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd of October 2019. That was the period of Covid19, it was tough but we were able to do it and God has been helping us.

“Like I said as at today we have 123 babies born through IVF. This August alone we had 9 babies. Some of them are not delivered here. I delivered three myself. What I realize is that IVF is very tough.

“Most women have gone through so much stress and again adding to their stress by saying they must deliver here is not fair. So I ask them where do you live, go and deliver near where you live so that the stress of coming to anti natal wont be too much.

“We normally deliver our babies in FETHI, EKSU, ABUAD Multi System Hospital. I have patients from ASABA, Port Harcourt, I just link them to Doctors there. As far as they are specialist they can take care of the baby.

“So, out of  123 babies, we have 81 single babies. We have 27 twins and we have eight sets of triplets. We have been doing that but our name actually came out in 2022 when the oldest patient to deliver through IVF was delivered here.

“That is Mrs Tope Ogundipe, she was in the news. She was 63 years old that time. so we begin to have referral from many places. I have friends that have invited me to PortarCourt saying that I will make more money there, because the price in Ekiti cant be the same in PortharCourt.

“I said somebody must be in Ekiti. No some of my patients come from abroad such as Canada, UK, because it is quite expensive there such that if you convert Nigerian money, it is going to be like N30 million, but here by the time you spend N4 million you are done so a lot of them come from abroad to do it.

“So like I said we have been referring our patients to various places to deliver. I am sure you heard recently that a 60 year old woman deliver through IVF at ABUAD, infact I didn’t know she was sixty.

“Fortunately she conceived through IVF here but since she live along Polytechnic road I said that will be too much stress for her , first she is old and because I like my patients to be coming frequently to the hospital so I can see them I said she should register anywhere near her place and I will call the Doctors there, infact we have had two triplets delivered at ABUAD before now.”
