The Ekiti State Government has called on alumni associations across the state to play more active roles in supporting their former schools and helping to create a more conducive learning environment for students.
The State Commissioner for Education, Dr. (Mrs.) Kofoworola Aderiye, made the appeal during the commissioning and handover of a 10-seater mini-bus and newly renovated facilities donated by the alumni association of Igbemo Community Comprehensive High School (ICCHS), Igbemo-Ekiti.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Mr. Bayode Ogunmola, the Commissioner commended the old students for complementing government efforts, noting that the refurbishment of a classroom block, upgrade of the science laboratory, and the donation of a mini-bus would significantly enhance both teaching and learning in the school.
Dr. Aderiye urged other alumni groups to emulate the ICCHS Old Students Association, reaffirming the state government’s readiness to partner with individuals, corporate organizations and development partners committed to advancing education in Ekiti.
In his remarks, the State Commissioner for Information, Taiwo Olatubosun, who also serves as Vice President of the ICCHS Alumni and Chairman of the project committee, described the initiative as a heartfelt effort to give back to their alma mater.
He emphasised that alumni associations have a responsibility to support their schools through fundraising for projects and scholarships, as well as providing mentorship, career guidance, networking opportunities, and infrastructural development, adding that these efforts help promote the institution’s image and contribute meaningfully to community development.
While acknowledging the significant strides made in the education sector under Governor Biodun Oyebanji, including infrastructural upgrades, expansion of digital learning, improved teachers’ welfare, curriculum enhancement, and payment of WAEC and JAMB fees for eligible students, Olatubosun stressed that sustained collaboration with alumni associations, host communities and other stakeholders remains crucial for continued progress.
Earlier, the school’s Principal, Mrs. Fasoranti, expressed deep appreciation to the alumni association for the generous intervention and assured that the facilities would be properly maintained for the benefit of current and future students.
The mini-bus was donated in memory of Mr. Bakare Akeem Arowolo, the school’s Senior Prefect in 1988 as a touching tribute aimed at preserving his legacy while investing in the brighter future of ICCHS students.
