Acting Vice-Chancellor Federal University Oye Ekiti (FUOYE), Ekiti State, Nigeria, Prof. Olubunmi Shittu has asked workers in the university under the umbrella of Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), FUOYE branch to sheathe their swords, saying the university was greater than individuals.
Professor Shittu specifically made an appeal to the workers, who embarked on a protest against the university over issues of delayed salary, relocation allowance and others, asking them to have a rethink as the university belonged to “all of us.”
According to him, the issue of salary was not intentional and while taking responsibility for all their agitation, insisted that such delay about salary had received prompt attention.
Professor Shittu said: “Salary is not intentional and I want to appeal to you even as I take responsibility as a leader for all your agitations.
“I want to assure you that the issue of salary will be resolved before the end of this week. Bursar is working round the clock to ensure prompt action.
“I also say here because I am not here to deceive you that I didn’t sign any document for #128million for anyone to be on leave. Please let us always verify our facts before pushing such narrative. It never happened, no one paid such amount for anyone. What is important to us is your welfare.
“The management and the council will look into your grievances and necessary action would be taken. We have listened to your agitations and we’re ready to work things out even as I want you all to know that this university belongs to all of us. I want to assure you that all the agitations will be looked into and resolved.
“As for the relocation allowance, we will ensure it is paid in tranches. I want to appeal to your conscience to calm the nerves as your grievances are already receiving Council’s attention.
“It’s when we have money that we will pay especially as students are still on holiday and whenever they resume we will work out the modalities and as soon as the money is ready we’ll liaise with your leaders.
“We have been paying allowances in the past and the spirit to continue with it will be with us. Please bear with us.”
