Oye Ekiti community condemns death of FUOYE student, calls for justice

The Oye-Ekiti, the host community of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), has condemned the untimely and tragic death Deborah Modupe Atanda, a promising student of the institution.

A statement by Elder Lucas Oniyelu, the National President of the Oye Progressive Union (OPU), expressed the condolences of the Oye community to the bereaved family and the FUOYE community, stating, “No words can adequately express the pain and grief they must be experiencing. We pray for God’s grace to grant them the strength and fortitude to bear this profound loss.”

According to him, the community of Oye-Ekiti is reeling from the devastating loss of one of its own, “we are devastated about Deborah’s untimely death. Her untimely demise has sent shockwaves throughout the community and ignited a passionate call for justice.

“The tragic incident unfolded on Wednesday, September 6th, 2023, when Deborah Modupe Atanda, a second-year student of FUOYE, met her untimely demise under suspicious circumstances. The shocking event has drawn widespread condemnation, and the entire community has come together in solidarity with her grieving family.

“Deborah’s family, friends, and well-wishers are struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss of a bright young woman with a promising future. The grieving family has received an outpouring of support from the community, which has united in offering condolences, prayers, and assistance during this painful time.

“The circumstances surrounding Deborah’s death have raised many questions, leading to demands for a thorough investigation. The Oye-Ekiti community, along with the FUOYE management and security agencies, has pledged to leave no stone unturned in their quest for justice.”

Oniyelu however, reaffirmed the community’s commitment to upholding its values and reputation, saying, “Regardless of whose interests may be at stake, we, as a united Oye community, are unwavering in our commitment to ensuring that the impeccable reputation of our community and that of FUOYE remains untarnished. We will not allow the criminal actions of a few unscrupulous individuals to define us.

“In light of this tragedy, there have been appeals for calm from students, particularly the members of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS). The community has called upon all concerned parties to allow the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation without interference, emphasizing that justice must prevail.

“As the investigation into Deborah’s death progresses, the Oye-Ekiti community has requested ongoing transparency and collaboration with the media and community members. This approach aims to ensure that the community remains informed and engaged in finding lasting solutions and preventing such a tragedy from happening again.

“The loss of Deborah Modupe Atanda is a profound tragedy that has deeply affected the Oye-Ekiti community and the FUOYE family. As the community comes together in mourning, their collective call for justice serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of unity and commitment to upholding the principles of justice and accountability, ” he said.
