The Vice-Chancellor Federal University Oye Ekiti, Ekiti State, Prof. Abayomi Sunday Fasina has stepped into an alleged detention and arrest of some union leaders of the university, asking the police to release them from detention.
The arrested union leaders, Comrades Faleye Benjamin, Ademola Mutiu, Oyelade Yekeen, Aluko Ayomikun and Nwokeke Barnabas were allegedly invited by the police over an unruly behaviour on October 14 when the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abayomi Sunday Fasina resumed office from his accumulated research leave.
On 14 October, 2025, the union leaders allegedly threw caution to the wind as they were chanting anti-Fasina, saying “Fasina can not walk freely on campus, Fasina ole, using foul words.”
Following this development, the police who were in possession of a series of videos which portrayed the union leaders as ready to cause breach of public peace, invited them to come and explain their own side of the story.
But apparently rose in defence of peace on campus, the Vice-Chancellor waded into the matter and asked the police to release the union leaders, who had refused to cooperate with the police.
Meanwhile, the university management has also called for restraint, asking the police to release the union leaders from police custody.
