The Methodist Church Nigeria, Ifaki Diocese has condemned the persistent kidnappings and killings in the nation including the tragedy in Eda Oniyo Ekiti state, where church members have been killed and abducted, saying these incidents constitute an affront to peaceful worship of our God.
The church also called for the radical reduction in the cost of governance and the full implementation of the Oronsaye Report, adding that Nigerian leaders must “tighten their belts” alongside the citizens.
These were parts of the communiques issued at the end of the 50th anniversary Synod held at Methodist Church Osi Ekiti on the 9th and 10th of May 2026.
According to the resolution signed by Rt Rev Jeremiah Abidemi Shitu and Sir Elder M. Ojo Administrative Bishop and Lay President respectively, the church appeals to the Federal and State governments to ensure equity fairness and justice in their dealings as a way of moving God’s hands to fight the battles.
“Emphasizing on the role of the Church as the spiritual and social conscience of the nation, the Synod while commending President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his courage in initiating long-overdue macroeconomic reforms, including the removal of the fuel subsidy however urged the President to strategise more aggressively on robust social protection systems adding that the Government must bridge the gap between economic statistics and the “empty plates” of the common man.
“In this connection, the President must ensure that states and local governments who are the major beneficiaries to invest the savings from the subsidy removal into infrastructure upgrades, provision of mass transit, food production and processing, and social safety nets to ameliorate the sufferings of the poor.
“The church demanded a radical reduction in the cost of governance and the full implementation of the Oronsaye Report and Nigerian leaders must “tighten their belts” alongside the citizens.
“The Church observed with grave concern the growing state of insecurity evident in persistent kidnappings and killings in the nation , including the tragedy in Eda Oniyo Ekiti state, where church members have been killed and abducted, saying these incidents constitute an affront to peaceful worship of our God.
“The church while acknowledging the efforts of our security forces call on the Government to deploy digital warfare technology (drones and AI) and the establishment of State Police among other measures in tackling the menace.
“The Synod commended Governor of Ekiti State Mr Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji for infrastructure and consistent salary payments, but urged him to utilize the increased financial allocation to the state to address the chronic lack of electricity in Ekiti since state governments are now empowered by law to generate electricity. The Church noted :”Darkness is a breeding ground for both poverty and insecurity; we need light to thrive in Ekiti.
“The synod supports the ongoing advocacy towards ensuring maximum participation of women in politics which led to the presentation of the Special Seats Bill( or Reserved Seat for Women bill) to the National Assembly, urging for its speedy passage into Law
“The synod frowns at the unfortunate paradigm shift where the Judiciary is now being used to determine who occupies political positions in the country. The synod therefore urges aspirants to reduce this trend by “playing to the rule of the game”.Political actors should ensure that the votes of the people count in the electoral process rather than attempts to vitiate the people’s votes through the judiciary.”
End.
